5Looks very cool on my Honda Element.
By John P. Thiel
I've had the dealer license plate frames on my car since I bought it a year and a half ago, but since I own the car through and through--it is not the dealer's car or the finance company's car, it's MY car, and my first car to boot--I wanted to get rid of them. So of course my first thought was to simply take off the frames and expose the license plates, but as a New York City resident that screams 'taxi' or some other commercial vehicle to me; it's impersonal. This isn't just a means to get from here to there, this is a major investment for me, and it grants me opportunities for work and play that I wouldn't have without it. Ever try taking a Greyhound bus to the zoo, to stay at some rural inn, or to a fancy restaurant you heard about which is out of town? Of course not. So something which does so much for your life should be personalized, and this item is one way to do that.

Besides which, one thing I have discovered as a newly baptized car owner (never baptize yourself with gasoline by the way) is that the more personalized your car is, the easier it is to find in a vast parking area at places like the Roosevelt Field mall--the Death Star of shopping malls--in Hempstead, Long Island. My car is special, but I'm certainly not the only person who owns a silver SUV and from a distance, amongst the suburban legions, it's not so special that you could pick that one needle out of a stack of needles without at least putting a bumper sticker on it.

So my two greatest hobbies besides repeated attempts to escape from New York City permanently are Astronomy and Cycling. Without my car I couldn't get my telescope to a dark site out of town or my bicycle to a similarly remote bike tour start location. I should have realized years that my lifestyle requires a personal mobile command unit instead of going on at parties saying, "Who the hell needs a car if they live in a major city? The trains and buses go everywhere I want to go." That, I now know, is bull cookies.

Virtually all the other cycling themed license plate frames were hard to read and boring looking. Cycling is fun, therefore the cycling themed item should also look fun, and this design does that. I like that it says "CYCLING" in big, bold letters, which offsets the cliche "I rather be . . .", and the two cyclist graphics do the trick for me.

The only possible problem with this product might be that, at least for New York plates, it almost completely covers the "New York" at the top of the plate. I'm not sure if that's legal, but doubt I'll get a ticket for it. The possibility of hiding the fact that I live in New York when I'm travelling is certainly appealing.

Bottom Line: Of course it works, quality material, nice graphics which are 'Life is Good-esque', and it makes my car more personal and stand out in a crowd.
